For Teens

So, you think your parents are lame? Annoying? They yell too much, take the fun out of everything, and get on your nerves?

You’re not alone in feeling frustrated with the way you and your parents get along, and you never have been! Way back in 1988 (like, 3 decades ago!), DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince declared that Parents Just Don’t Understand (do yourself a favor, and click here to watch the video). Kids all over, me included, bobbed their heads and rapped along with The Fresh Prince (you may know him as Will Smith) because FINALLY someone was brave enough to make our struggle public, to write a song about it! Now, maybe our parents would see how ridiculous they’d been acting! Maybe my mom would stop ordering me the 3-pack of jeans from the Spiegel catalogue and let me pick some out at the mall!! Maybe my dad would see that it actually is normal for girls and boys to talk on the phone and that I wouldn’t forget all about my schoolwork if he allowed me to date!

It took more than a song to enlighten my parents, and I had some things to learn, myself. You and your parents can find common ground. Let me support you through your process.

Does school suck? Can’t deal with the pressure and the cliques? The teachers? Do they say you have a bad attitude?

Again, you are not alone. Many teenagers have the same or similar problems navigating middle and high school for many reasons, including the pressure of living up to others’ expectations. It can be really tough to walk the balance between fitting in and being yourself (or even figuring out who “yourself” is). Let me support you through your process.
